Falcons’ Defense Bounces Back in Skyridge’s Win Over Orem

We were lucky enough to get a Saturday night game on the schedule with two top-notch teams. The #1 ranked team in 5A Orem Tigers were coming off a win in Hawaii and would be taking on one of 6A’s best teams in Skyridge to give us a prime-time matchup.

The Falcons found their way on the scoreboard first when Jagger Fountaine connected with former Tiger Steeler Wesley for a touchdown. Wesley is a big target for the Falcons and should be hauling in many more touchdowns on the year as one of their favorite red zone targets.

Orem has been splitting reps looking for answers at quarterback with Rock Speredon and Tanner Lewis. This time Lewis delivered a beautiful ball to the back right end zone to Po Faumui and tied the ball game.

This game would stay tied at 7-7 going into a much longer halftime than expected when the game was delayed due to lightning.

This game was a little short on offensive firepower, but most definitely not on the defensive side of the ball. We saw four interceptions from four different players. Ethan Schriever got a big-time pick for the Falcons, while three Tigers delivered for Orem. Kasen McLay, Kaio Akana and Aoi Faumui all changed possessions in Orem’s favor with Kaio taking his back for 6.

The Tigers led 14-7 heading into the 4th quarter and with points coming at a minimum for Skyridge the odds were in Orem’s favor. That all changed when Omarian Sanders stepped up big time and created separation on a go route to the end zone to tie the game back up!

Skyridge’s defense came up clutch all game long and got the Falcon offense the ball back. Jagger connected with Dax Rehrer for a big time gain to put them inside the 7-yard line and Beckham Bennett finished the job with a go-ahead touchdown run. 

That defense stood tall once again as they stopped the Tigers in their tracks on their last drive of the game. The bounce-back and resilience from the defense cannot be overstated. Last week was rough, giving up 40 points, but this week they flipped the script and were the reason Skyridge won the game, only giving up 7 points. Senior linebacker Rex Caswell is the heart and soul of that defense and brought the energy all game long!

Skyridge will be playing two out-of-state teams in their next 2 games, while the Tigers will host nationally ranked Mater Dei before beginning region play the following week.
