Morgan Mercy Rules Sky View in Statement Win

The Sky View Bobcats walk into Morgan coming off a tightly contested win over Park City last week, meanwhile, the Trojans were looking to bounce back after losing to 4A’s best team in Ridgeline.

These 2 teams met last year as well in week 2 up in Smithfield. That was a tight one that the Trojans were able to come back home with the win. Things seemed to be lined up for another close one this year… that was not the case. This game was over right from the start.

On the very first play, Morgan linebacker Cade Spens jumped the route for the interception and took it back to the crib.

The Morgan defense would continue to make plays as other star linebacker Krew Asay recovered a fumbled snap and that would lead to George Thurstons first TD of 3 on the night. Thurston would later bulldoze his way into the end zone for another TD to put the Trojans up 21-0 still in the 1st quarter.

Morgan would almost replicate that 21-0 score again in the second quarter, but this time other Trojan players joined the party. Rhett Larsen ran one in and would later haul in a deep ball from QB Owen Gilson and take it 91 yards to the house. Owen Gilson also connected with the other Owen, Owen Belliston right next to the front right pylon. Before we knew it, it was halftime with Morgan up 41-0 and this game was well out of reach.

The game would come to an end after the third quarter due to a mercy rule with the final being Morgan 47, Sky View 0.

There’s a lot that can be said about this Morgan squad. First off, they are big. Not many 3A teams will be able to match their size and physicality. The defensive line and linebackers are strong and versatile. Krew Asay, Cade Spens and Kwayde Meibos are absolute demons on the defensive side of the ball. Sky View was under pressure or met in the backfield on almost every single play. That set the tone from the jump and made everyone else’s lives easier.

The Trojan offensive attack is extremely fun to watch! They play very fast and aren’t afraid to take their shots. You’ll see a lot of spread offense, with running backs and receivers consistently motioning pre-snap. It’s an in-depth playbook at the high school level that is proving to be extremely effective. Morgan has many different receiving threats and their O-line was great at protecting the quarterback. Gilson wasn’t under pressure too much, but when he was he would get out of trouble with his legs. Some designed QB runs, some scrambles, but Sky View was watching Gilson run all over in Thursday night’s game.

There’s a reason this team is region favorites once again, and might be title favorites after making a statement like they did tonight.

Morgan will take on Park City next week and then will be faced with a big-time challenge hosting a good 5A Bountiful squad. They were able to beat both of those teams in 2025.

Sky View will also be facing two opponents that they beat in the 2025 season. The Bobcats travel down to Spanish Fork next week and host Bear River (region opponent) looking to get back on track.
